Fourth Quarter Progress Reports Robocall

5/8/2020,3pm. Sent to parents of scholars in grades 9-11. Voiced by Assistant Principal Howell.

Good afternoon, and Happy Friday, to our Holy Cross Families.

We hope this message finds you well.

At this time in the fourth, and final, marking period of the year. We would be mailing paper progress reports home to our families. With our move to distance learning, our students and families have become more connected to the technology we use to provide online learning experiences, through Google Classroom, and online grade reporting, through PowerSchool. Teachers have added comments to your scholar’s fourth quarter grade.

These comments can be seen by logging into PowerSchool and clicking on the blue speech bubble found next to any grade. Please take some time to review the comments shared by teachers, and the grades your scholar has achieved thus far in the marking period.

We encourage all students, especially those struggling, to be an active participant in the office hour sessions hosted by our teachers. Students should check google classroom for information about when their teacher is hosting their next google meet. These online sessions provide live, face-to-face, small group review for each of our students to engage in with their teacher.

Thank you to all of the work that you, as parents, have done to help your scholar in completing assignments and managing their time at home.

Enjoy your weekend and best of luck to those students preparing for AP Exams next week.

Guidance Senior Class Robocall

5/8/2020, 3pm. Sent to senior parents. Voiced by Assistant Principal Howell.

Good afternoon to the Parents and Guardians of the Class of 2020.

These remaining days as a Holy Cross student are in preparation for something very exciting, your scholar’s future.

There are a few last minute items we need our seniors to focus on before they take that next step;

  • Each senior must complete their Graduation Survey in Naviance indicating the college they plan to attend in the Fall (Be sure to click on “Update” next to the college attending or it will not capture the students response).
  • We have created an email where our seniors are encouraged to share a picture of themselves displaying their college choice or next step decision. Students are encouraged to be creative in how they express their decision. Simply send a picture of your future graduate in their college gear or holding a sign or college acceptance letter to Classof2020nextstep@myhchs.org.
  • The Guidance Department and all of the Holy Cross community look forward to celebrating each of our seniors and all of their accomplishments.

Details from this message have also been emailed to seniors Holy Cross accounts.

Senior Academics Robocall Transcript

5/5/2020, 8:00am. Sent to the parents of all senior scholars. Voiced by Assistant Principal Howell.

Good morning and hello to the families of the Class of 2020.

The purpose of this call is to remind you that there are two weeks of class work for your scholar to engage in as we close in on the final weeks of seniors at Holy Cross. Please continue to put your effort into ensuring that their work is quality work. It will affect their GPA, their permanent mark on who they were as academic students at Holy Cross High School.

We recognize the loss that seniors must be feeling. The loss of spring sports programs. The loss of a senior prom. And the loss of an otherwise typical graduation. Our recognition of this loss provides little solace for our students who have experienced it. But harsh reality has placed these events outside of our control. To quote ‘Remember the Titans’, “Sometimes life is just hard, for no reason at all.” We will not see this graduating class for what it has lost. We will see it as the graduating class that has stepped up. The class that has made positive videos and motivating signs. The graduating class of cheerful celebratory car parades and emotional memes. The class of 2020 has truly been a case of heroes supporting heroes. And as we plan our senior events here at HC, we plan to celebrate all that the Class of 2020 has had to support us in this time of need. From all of us here at Holy Cross, stay safe, best wishes and God bless.

Celebrating Our Teachers

“Zeal is the great desire to make God known, loved, and served, and thus to bring knowledge of salvation to others. . . . Teachers who possess it fulfill the duties of their profession with enthusiasm, love, courage, and perseverance.”

— Bl. Basil Moreau, Christian Education

Dear Holy Cross Families,

By now, we have all learned of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s decision that all elementary and secondary schools shall remain closed for the duration of the current 2019-2020 school year, as New York continues efforts to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. As such, the Catholic High Schools of the Diocese of Brooklyn, which includes Holy Cross High School, will remain closed through the end of June. The distance and digital learning platforms in place will serve as the instructional program for our school for the remainder of this academic year.

I am very proud of our school which successfully transitioned to a distance and digital learning platform almost immediately upon the governor’s order to close all school buildings. This would not have been possible without the hard work of our teachers and the leadership of our dedicated administration, who rose to this enormous challenge. Our school has continued to provide each of our students with a faith-based academic program, ensuring that they are being challenged to learn every day. Our parents have also contributed immeasurably to the success of this new digital learning environment.

We will be working with our seniors and their families to ensure that the milestone celebrations will be honored and recognized. As we have done so far during this pandemic, we will continue to share resources for our families as we confront this challenging end to the school year.

The Coronavirus statistics indicate that both Brooklyn and Queens have been the hardest-hit areas in New York City and State. As a Catholic school community in the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, we continue to pray for everyone’s health and safety. Our faith, love, and hope remain central to all we do now and in the future.

Sincerely,
Edward Burns

Letter from Principal Burns – 4/18/20

Dear Holy Cross Families,

As we continue our distance learning, I want to thank everyone who participated in Mrs. Burchik’s “Great Easter Egg Challenge”. The photo submissions are great; they have definitely brightened up the distance learning page! Please keep submitting your photos as you participate in Service Learning Opportunities and for the Spirit Week challenges that are underway this week.

Students, don’t forget how important your daily routine should be for school. Everyday you must check the Distance Learning Page and complete the following:

  • Daily Attendance (you must be signed in on your device with your myhchs account)
  • Daily Prayer
  • Read & Review the following:
  • Announcement/Reminders
    • Service Learning
    • Guidance Connection
    • Clubs & Activities
    • Fitness
  • Check your Holy Cross email account every day.
  • Log into Google Classroom and start your daily lessons & assignments
  • Don’t forget to participate in “Office Hours/ Google Meeting” with your teachers. This is your opportunity to engage directly with your teachers in order to receive assistance and support for understanding core concepts and related skills.

On Monday April 6, 2020, the State announced that high school Regents exams have been canceled. All students will be granted a waiver for all exams they were scheduled to take in June. This waiver will treat these exams as passed for the purpose of meeting graduation requirements. If you have specific questions related to Regents exams, please reach out to academics@myhchs.org.

On Thursday, April 16, 2020, Governor Cuomo announced that the extension of the NY Pause order will stay in effect through May 15th. During this extended period of time, we will continue to engage in remote learning as we practice social distancing so that everyone in our school communities can remain safe.

Seniors, I will be sending out a survey to help us plan commencement activities.

I will continue to keep you updated. Stay safe. God bless you all.
