THANK YOU to the Medical Professionals

  • To accompany this appreciation meal for the medical professionals at Northwell Health, Northshore LIJ, Holy Cross students also shared a special THANK YOU.

Asian Culture Club- 1,000 Paper Cranes:

  • The crane has long been a symbol in Asian cultures representing good health, longevity, truth and fidelity. There is a storied history of the thousand paper cranes, and this gesture has been sent to show support for those suffering from illness or diseases. Students created an origami crane (see tutorials here, while logged into your school account), and took two photographs (one of the crane, and one of them holding the crane). The video presentation of our cranes was shared with the children at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children to show them that they are always important to us, even when we can not physically be there with them.

SupportLocal

  • As seen on the numerous commercials on television during these challenging times, local businesses are in need of our help.
  • Ordering delivery or takeout is a simple way to show your support of local restaurants and businesses and help them during this difficult time.
  • Students were asked to take a ‘selfie’ of themself, (with their family if you would like) and their food order from a local restaurant. Pictures can be seen here.

Student Reader for the Daily Prayer & End of the Day Prayer:

  • You will be creating a recording of you sharing the daily prayer with the school community.
  • Five hours of service will be credited for student participants.
  • Interested students should send an email to service@myhchs.org and further instructions will be provided.

Video of Your “At Home Service”:

  • As mentioned, service of others has become increasingly difficult. One of the places where your help has become essential is at home!
  • Send a video of you helping a sibling with homework, cooking dinner, cleaning the house, or any of the other ways you have been assisting in your own home to service@myhchs.org.
  • Students may also send in a video of them describing the various ways they have been helping others in their own homes.
  • Students may be eligible to receive up to ten hours of service credit.
  • In order to receive this amount of service, students must submit a more detailed description of their “At Home Service” in an email to service@myhchs.org
  • All Videos Due by Monday, May 11th.

Service Learning Update

Dear Students,

On Friday, March 20th, Seniors were expected to have their 40 hours of service completed. Juniors were expected to have 20 hours of service completed, Sophomores were expected to have 10 hours of service completed, and Freshmen were continuing to meet their service requirement within the school community. These crucial ‘due dates’ are set for a specific reason and situations like this remind us that it is of the utmost importance to be responsible and follow the given guidelines; however, Service Learning is about much more than ‘hours.’

When we discuss service at Holy Cross High School, we speak of our obligation to help others, as this is a part of our mission. During these uncertain times, our ability to help those in need will naturally be limited. While the Service Learning Department at Holy Cross is currently looking for ways to incorporate remote service opportunities into the educational experience, we would also like to challenge our students to continue to live the mission of Holy Cross by helping others. Helping our siblings complete school assignments and assisting our parents/guardians with household tasks are normal expectations, but, the current world is anything but normal. Performing these acts of kindness have now become essential ways that we can be of service to others.

Over the coming days/weeks, the Service Learning Department will continue to work on ways we can help those in need. In the meantime, we must continue to help our families, in any way we can. Keeping a record of the ways our roles in our families change over the coming days/weeks will serve as a reminder of our strength and ability to help others during this time. The Service Learning Department is working diligently to determine a way to allow this needed service to your families to count towards your service ‘hours’ requirement. As always, feel free to contact me if there are any questions, comments, or concerns. We will get through this together.

Stay Safe,

Mr. Brolly
