Mathematics
The Mathematics Department challenges students of varying levels and abilities so that they are able to use and understand math in all areas of their lives. Our math classes range from the application of the basic math and algebraic skills needed for everyday life to the more abstract levels of math encountered in science and engineering careers.
The Mathematics Department adheres to the curriculum set by the New York State Department of Education. This curriculum helps students develop an integrated understanding of mathematics as they study algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. In addition to mathematical skills, our courses emphasize organization, critical thinking, decision-making, and the appropriate use of technology. The interactive nature of this discipline reminds students that mathematics is not a “spectator sport.” Ample practice is needed to provide reinforcement and be able to apply what is learned to solve problems.
Each math teacher strives to promote academic excellence and mathematical curiosity, along with an appreciation for the beauty of mathematics. Throughout the course of studies, our teachers address the question: When are we going to use this? We challenge our students to go beyond simply memorizing and applying formulas and techniques, to understanding the underlying concepts and knowing when and how they may be applied.
The Mathematics Department strives to make our students aware of the importance of mathematics beyond the classroom. Mathematics permeates every aspect of our lives! Used in science, finance, decision-making, technology, and more, we cannot function in the world without the ability to understand and apply mathematics!
