The Matthew Brian Giannuzzi Fund

In 1971, legendary Holy Cross basketball coach Bill O’Meara decided to create a Varsity “B” basketball team because so many students wanted to play for Holy Cross. He selected Mr. Joseph Giannuzzi to be the first coach of the Varsity “B” team. Since Holy Cross now had four teams, gym time came at a premium.

Therefore, the “B” team began rolling out the balls at 6:00AM for daily practice. This tradition continues today, so it goes without saying that it takes a special level of dedication to play Varsity “B”- a.k.a. 6AM PRIDE. Mr. Giannuzzi continued to coach the “B” team for twenty-five years until he was appointed Principal of Holy Cross High School and had to retire from coaching.

During his long tenure as coach, his sons Joseph and Matthew were fixtures at practices and home games. Tragically, Matthew passed away in March of 2001 and there is an annual basketball tournament held in his memory. All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the Matthew Brian Giannuzzi Fund at Holy Cross High School. This fund provides Holy Cross students with financial assistance and special programs throughout the school year.

This year’s game will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 7:00 pm.

You may purchase tickets at the door. For more information contact Keith Goggin, Athletic Director kgoggin@myhchs.org.
