36th Annual Golf Classic

A picture-perfect day with comfortable temperatures greeted golfers and guests at the annual Holy Cross High School Golf Classic on Monday, June 25th where over 140 alumni, parents and friends took part in day and evening activities at Engineers Country Club in Roslyn Harbor and nearby North Shore Country Club in Glen Head. Following a sumptuous breakfast at Engineers, golfers gathered for a shotgun start at both courses before returning to the Club for a Cocktail Reception and Dinner Buffet, Dessert and Live Auction. Members of the Holy Cross golf team challenged guests to get closer to the pin on the par 3s where participants also had the opportunity to win a lease on a car and a lifetime membership at Simplay in Hauppauge with a hole-in-one. The day also featured contests, giveaways, a silent auction and numerous raffle prizes donated by members of the Holy Cross family and friends.

We would like to thank our generous sponsors, contributors, golfers, auction/raffle donors and dedicated volunteers who helped raise more than $145,000, the net proceeds of which will benefit the Alumni Scholarship Fund at Holy Cross High School. This fund, established by Holy Cross alumni in 1983, provides full, four-year scholarships to incoming freshmen based on academic achievement.

Soccer Reunion

On June 6, 2018, 31 Holy Cross alumni soccer players and their coaches gathered to celebrate a reunion on the 4th floor terrace of the school. Memories and laughter were exchanged between friends throughout the night. Athletic Director, Keith Goggin ‘92, gave the men a tour of Legends Hall, where the jerseys of several alumni who played Division 1 or pro soccer after graduating from Holy Cross were framed and hung in their honor. They also had the opportunity to view a banner hanging in the gym in memory of Taso Pappas ’89 as well as a plaque listing recipients of the soccer award given in his name each year.

Br. Francis Ellis, CSC Sends His Greetings!

August 2, 2017 —  Br. Francis Ellis was available for a bit of conversation about Holy Cross High School on Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Jimmy Conboy ’83, Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Mr. Mike Truesdell, President had a chance to drop in at Columba Hall on the campus of Notre Dame. Jimmy and Mike were between seminar sessions at a conference on Catholic secondary education.

During the conversation Br. Francis Ellis reported that he plays two rounds of golf per week now that he has retired from driving the shuttle bus for the residence of Holy Cross Village.

Br. Francis Ellis also volunteered his support for the May 2017 announcement of the expansion of the mission at Holy Cross High School to begin admitting young women. Since he enjoyed career experiences teaching in other Congregation of Holy Cross sponsored high schools that are co-ed, Jimmy and Mike asked him what Holy Cross High School students will notice first. “Good things,” he said. He continued, “You will see that students will push to do their best in the classrooms and respect one another.”

Br. Francis Ellis has a prodigious memory and asked about many alumni from his years of 1963 through 1978 at Holy Cross High School. He sends his greetings to all!

Past NY CHSFL Athletes Gather in NYC

Past NY CHSFL Athletes Gather in NYC

Congratulations Denny Golden ’59 and Tom Ehrhardt ’81

Each spring, for the past 7 years, a group of guys from former CHSFL teams (players and coaches) gather in NYC to share stories of playing football against one another and catch up with old friends. This gathering, held on April 26th this year, is known as the Big East Blast, as the first event was held during the Big East Basketball tournament.

Individuals are honored each year by the Blast Committee. This year’s honorees included two Football Legends from the Knights! Denny Golden ’59, Holy Cross’ first Captain and recently retired President of Fontbonne University, and Holy Cross Quarterback Tom Ehrhardt ’81 who went on to play as a free agent with the New York Jets and Cincinnati Bengals. Also honored at the 2017 Blast were Renzie Lamb, a Chaminade grad and former coach at Williams College and JP Foschi, a Chaminade grad who played tight end in the NFL.

A record number of former Holy Cross Alum (players and coaches) came out to celebrate this occasion. Below are a few photos of the day and a link to view more pictures of what was truly a very special event for our School and its great athletic tradition.
