37th Annual Golf and Dinner Classic

It was a beautiful, sunny day when Holy Cross High School hosted their 37th Annual Golf and Dinner Classic at Engineers Country Club in Roslyn Harbor, New York on Monday, June 24, 2019.  Following warm-ups on the putting green and range, golfers dined on a bountiful Breakfast Buffet in the dining room and outdoor patio, then took to the course for an 11:00 am shotgun start. Holy Cross students greeted golfers at Hole #11 where they competed against John Lombardo ‘22 to get closer to the pin in the Beat the Student contest. Kayden Superville ’21, along with Lady Knights Emily Browne, Sara Keenan and Gabriella Tesi, managed the ticket sales with former Principal Joe Giannuzzi ’65 overseeing all. The ladies were more than happy to share with alumni their experiences as the first female students at Holy Cross High School!

Returning to the Club for the Cocktail Reception and Dinner Buffet, golfers were joined by their spouses, friends and Holy Cross parents. The overall dining experience and quality of food was outstanding and raffle ticket sales were brisk (over 50 items to choose from!). Bidders on the Silent Auction attracted, among others, fans of the Yankees, Mets, Jets, Rangers and St. John’s Red Storm.

Adjoining to the dining room for Dessert and the Live Auction, Golf Committee Chairman Chuck Merritt ’84 introduced Terry Tarpey, Sr. and Al Ceresa, members of the first graduating Class of 1959, this year’s golf outing honorees.  Mike Truesdell, President of Holy Cross High School, gave a short “state of the school” address and Alumni Scholar Ian Doyle ’20 conveyed his gratitude to all of those present for their support of the Alumni Scholarship Fund. The highlight of the evening by far was the Live Auction, conducted by alumni James Benesh ’08 and AJ Sonnick ’11, who sparked non-stop laughter while generating bids totaling more than $21,000. One guest,  John Giannone ’81, MSG Sportscaster for the New York Rangers, sealed the deal with a last minute contribution of a 7-night stay at his Villa on Hilton Head.
