Our school came together to celebrate Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent, a season of fasting, reflection, rebirth and renewal.
Students, faculty and staff also officially welcomed our celebrant, Father Tobechchukwu “Tobe” Offiah, the Parochial Vicar from Sacred Heart of Jesus, as our new chaplain at Holy Cross High School. We also welcomed back Deacon Ernesto Avallone ’78 P’07 ’09 ’14 ’24 who assisted in our Lenten prayer service.
Father Tobe spoke to our community about making the time in our day to simply talk to God in our daily life. Whether it was praying in church, or at school in our Chapel of the Holy Family, or even at home in our bedroom, Father Tobe spoke about the importance of realizing how much God loves each one of us.
The ashes on our foreheads remind us all of our own mortality and are a symbol of our need to reconcile with God as we await the celebration of the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Easter.
“By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” – Genesis 3:19
